'''Particle physics''' or '''high-energy physics''' is the study of [[Physics:Elementary particle|fundamental particles]] and [[Physics:Fundamental interaction|forces]] that constitute [[Physics:Matter|matter]] and [[Physics:Radiation|radiation]]. The field also studies combinations of elementary particles up to the scale of protons and neutrons, while the study of combination of protons and neutrons is called [[Physics:Nuclear physics|nuclear physics]].

The fundamental particles in the [[Astronomy:Universe|universe]] are classified in the [[Physics:Standard Model|Standard Model]] as [[Physics:Fermion|fermion]]s (matter particles) and [[Physics:Boson|boson]]s (force-carrying particles). There are three [[Physics:Generation (particle physics)|generations]] of fermions,  although ordinary matter is made only from the first fermion generation. The first generation consists of [[Physics:Up quark|up]] and [[Physics:Down quark|down quark]]s which form  [[Physics:Proton|proton]]s and [[Physics:Neutron|neutron]]s,  and [[Physics:Electron|electron]]s and [[Physics:Electron neutrino|electron neutrino]]s. The three fundamental interactions known to be mediated by bosons are [[Physics:Electromagnetism|electromagnetism]], the [[Physics:Weak interaction|weak interaction]], and the [[Physics:Strong interaction|strong interaction]].

Quarks cannot exist on their own but form [[Physics:Hadron|hadron]]s.  Hadrons that contain an odd number of quarks are called [[Physics:Baryon|baryon]]s and those that contain an even number are called [[Physics:Meson|meson]]s. Two baryons, the [[Physics:Proton|proton]] and the [[Physics:Neutron|neutron]], make up most of the mass of ordinary matter. Mesons are unstable and the longest-lived last for only a few hundredths of a [[Microsecond|microsecond]]. They occur after collisions between particles made of quarks, such as fast-moving protons and neutrons in [[Astronomy:Cosmic ray|cosmic ray]]s. Mesons are also produced in [[Physics:Cyclotron|cyclotron]]s or other [[Physics:Particle accelerator|particle accelerator]]s.

Particles have corresponding  [[Physics:Antiparticle|antiparticle]]s with the same [[Physics:Mass|mass]] but with opposite [[Physics:Electric charge|electric charge]]s. For example, the antiparticle of the [[Physics:Electron|electron]] is the [[Physics:Positron|positron]]. The electron has a negative electric charge, the positron has a positive charge. These antiparticles can theoretically form a corresponding form of matter called [[Physics:Antimatter|antimatter]]. Some particles, such as the [[Physics:Photon|photon]], are their own antiparticle.

These [[Physics:Elementary particle|elementary particle]]s are excitations of the [[Physics:Field#Quantum fields|quantum fields]] that also govern their interactions. The dominant theory explaining these fundamental particles and fields, along with their dynamics, is called the [[Physics:Standard Model|Standard Model]]. The [[Physics:Quantum gravity|reconciliation of gravity]] to the current particle physics theory is not solved; many theories have addressed this problem, such as [[Physics:Loop quantum gravity|loop quantum gravity]], [[Physics:String theory|string theory]] and [[Physics:Supersymmetry|supersymmetry theory]].

Practical particle physics is the study of these particles in [[Physics:Radioactive decay|radioactive]] processes and in particle accelerators such as the [[Physics:Large Hadron Collider|Large Hadron Collider]]. Theoretical particle physics is the study of these particles in the context of [[Astronomy:Cosmology|cosmology]] and [[Physics:Quantum mechanics|quantum theory]]. The current state of the classification of all elementary particles is explained by the [[Physics:Standard Model|Standard Model]], which gained widespread acceptance in the mid-1970s after experimental confirmation of the existence of [[Physics:Quark|quark]]s. It describes the [[Physics:Strong interaction|strong]], [[Physics:Weak interaction|weak]], and [[Physics:Electromagnetism|electromagnetic]] [[Physics:Fundamental interaction|fundamental interaction]]s, using mediating [[Physics:Gauge boson|gauge boson]]s. Theoretical particle physics attempts to develop the models, theoretical framework, and mathematical tools to understand current experiments and make predictions for future experiments (see also [[Physics:Theoretical physics|theoretical physics]]). There are several major interrelated efforts being made in theoretical particle physics today.

One important branch attempts to better understand the [[Physics:Standard Model|Standard Model]] and its tests. Theorists make quantitative predictions of observables at [[Physics:Collider|collider]] and [[Physics:Astroparticle physics|astronomical]] experiments, which along with experimental measurements is used to extract the parameters of the Standard Model with less uncertainty. This work probes the limits of the Standard Model and therefore expands scientific understanding of nature's building blocks. Those efforts are made challenging by the difficulty of calculating high precision quantities in [[Physics:Quantum chromodynamics|quantum chromodynamics]]. Some theorists working in this area use the tools of perturbative [[Physics:Quantum field theory|quantum field theory]] and [[Physics:Effective field theory|effective field theory]], referring to themselves as phenomenologists.{{Citation needed|date=September 2020}} Others make use of [[Physics:Lattice field theory|lattice field theory]] and call themselves ''lattice theorists''.

==Practical applications==
In principle, all physics (and practical applications developed therefrom) can be derived from the study of fundamental particles. In practice, even if "particle physics" is taken to mean only "high-energy atom smashers", many technologies have been developed during these pioneering investigations that later find wide uses in society. Particle accelerators are used to produce [[Medicine:Isotopes in medicine|medical isotopes]] for research and treatment (for example, isotopes used in PET imaging), or used directly in [[Medicine:External beam radiotherapy|external beam radiotherapy]].
