The MacGregor 22 is a recreational [[Engineering:Keelboat|keelboat]], built predominantly of [[Chemistry:Fiberglass|fiberglass]], with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a nearly plumb [[Engineering:Transom (nautical)|transom]], a folding transom-hung [[Engineering:Rudder|rudder]] controlled by a [[Engineering:Tiller|tiller]] and a lifting keel. It has positive foam flotation for safety. The boat has a draft of {{convert|5.50|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the lifting keel extended and {{convert|1.00|ft|m|abbr=on}} with it retracted, allowing operation in shallow water, [[Engineering:Beaching (nautical)|beaching]] or ground transportation on a [[Engineering:Boat trailer|trailer]].<ref name="Data"/><ref name="Henkel"/>

The boat is normally fitted with a small {{convert|3|to|6|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} [[Engineering:Outboard motor|outboard motor]] for docking and maneuvering.<ref name="Data"/><ref name="Henkel"/>

The design has sleeping accommodation for five people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin, a straight settee and a drop-down dinette table that converts into a double berth in the main cabin. The [[Engineering:Galley (kitchen)|galley]] is located on the port side at the [[Engineering:Companionway|companionway]] ladder. The galley is equipped with a two-burner stove and a sink. The enclosed [[Engineering:Head (watercraft)|head]] is located just aft of the bow cabin on the starboard side. Cabin headroom is {{convert|48|in|cm|0|abbr=on}} and there is also a main cabin pop-top to increase headroom.<ref name="Data"/><ref name="Henkel"/>

In a review SailRite wrote, "the MacGregor 22 was designed to provide the best accommodation for the money for a boat its size. The MacGregor 22['s] light displacement gives it great performance in light to moderate wind conditions."<ref name="SR"/>
