==Design==
The Lagoon 500 is a recreational [[Engineering:Catamaran|catamaran]], built predominantly of [[Chemistry:Polyester|polyester]] [[Chemistry:Fiberglass|fiberglass]] sandwich, with wood trim. It has a [[Engineering:Fractional rig|fractional]] [[Engineering:Sloop|sloop]] rig, with a deck-stepped mast, two sets of swept [[Engineering:Spreader (sailboat)|spreaders]] and [[Chemistry:Aluminum|aluminum]] spars with 1X19 [[Chemistry:Stainless steel|stainless steel]] wire rigging. The hulls have slightly raked stems, reverse transoms with swimming platforms, dual internally mounted spade-type [[Engineering:Rudder|rudder]]s controlled by a [[Engineering:Ship's wheel|wheel]] on a flying bridge and twin fixed fin [[Engineering:Keel|keel]]s. It displaces {{convert|38808|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}}. The boat can also be steered from the salon nav station.<ref name="Data"/><ref name="Guide"/><ref name="Specs"/>

The boat is fitted with twin Japanese [[Company:Yanmar|Yanmar]] diesel engines of {{convert|75|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} each, with [[Engineering:Saildrive|saildrive]]s for docking and maneuvering. [[Company:Volvo|Volvo]] {{convert|55|hp|kW|0|abbr=on}} engines were factory options. The design has sleeping accommodation for six to nine people in layouts of three to five cabins, each with its own [[Engineering:Head (watercraft)|head]]. The main salon has an L-shaped settee while the rear cockpit lounge has a U-shaped settee. The [[Engineering:Galley (kitchen)|galley]] is located on the port side of the main salon. The galley is U-shaped and is equipped with a four-burner stove, a refrigerator, freezer and a double sink. A forward facing navigation station is beside the galley. In a 2006 ''Cruising World'' review, Jeremy McGeary wrote, "with sheets eased, the Lagoon 500 behaved as though 20 knots of wet wind were nothing, zooming along at 10 knots and over, steady as a ferryboat, and giving a preview of how it would devour the passages that lie between the Caribbean’s Windward Islands."<ref name="McGeary"/>

In a review for ''Cruising Sea'', Daniella Wender wrote, "the Lagoon 500 is a conscientiously designed vessel that employs the sailing techniques of larger Lagoon models into a more compact vessel.
