A '''barca-longa''' (1600s, also barqua-; 1600s–1700s barco-longo)<ref name=oed/> was a two- or three-masted [[Engineering:Lugger|lugger]] used near the coasts of Spain and Portugal, and more widely in the [[Place:Mediterranean Sea|Mediterranean Sea]].<ref name=king100>{{cite book|last1=King|first1=Dean|title=A Sea of Words|date=2000|publisher=Henry Holt|isbn=978-0-8050-6615-9|pages=100|edition=3}}</ref>  Barca-longas were used in Spain and Portugal for fishing, and were employed by the Royal Navy in Mediterranean waters for shore raids or as dispatch boats. In general, they were not in Royal Navy ownership. The Oxford English Dictionary's earliest reference is from 1681.<ref name=oed>{{Cite OED|barca-longa|id=15467}}</ref>
