The '''headwater darter''' ('''''Etheostoma lawrencei''''') is a species of freshwater [[Biology:Ray-finned fish|ray-finned fish]], a darter from the subfamily [[Biology:Etheostomatinae|Etheostomatinae]], part of the family [[Biology:Percidae|Percidae]], which also contains the perches, [[Biology:Gymnocephalus|ruffes]] and [[Biology:Sander (fish)|pikeperches]]. It is [[Biology:Endemism|endemic]] to the eastern {{wipe|United States}} where it is found in Kentucky and {{wipe|Tennessee}} in the upper Green River system down to the Mud River, in the Cumberland River and upper Salt River systems.  It is an inhabitant of streams up to about {{convert|5|m|ft}} wide with gravel or cobble substrates.  Males of this species can reach a length of {{convert|6.2|cm|in}} [[Biology:Fish measurement|SL]] while females only reach {{convert|5.7|cm|in}}.<ref name = Fishbase>{{FishBase species |genus= Etheostoma|species= lawrencei| month = February | year = 2014}}</ref> The headwater darter was first formally [[Biology:Species description|described]] in 2002 by Patrick A. Ceas and Brooks M.
