It is native to [[Earth:South America|South America]], where it is known only from the Tocantins River basin in {{wipe|Brazil}}.<ref>Cardoso, Alexandre & Lucinda, Paulo. (2003). Three new species of Hemiancistrus (Teleostei: Siluriformes: Loricariidae) from the rio Tocantins basin with comments on the genus. Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. 14.</ref> The species reaches 14.2&nbsp;cm (5.6 inches) in [[Biology:Fish measurement|standard length]]. Although originally described as a species of ''[[Biology:Hemiancistrus|Hemiancistrus]]'' in 2003, a 2015 review conducted by Jonathan W. Armbruster (of [[Organization:Auburn University|Auburn University]]), David C. Werneke, and Milton Tan listed the species as valid within ''[[Biology:Ancistomus|Ancistomus]]''.<ref name=":0">Armbruster, J. W., Werneke, D. C., & Tan, M. (2015). Three new species of saddled loricariid catfishes, and a review of Hemiancistrus, Peckoltia, and allied genera (Siluriformes).
