'''HD 48265''' is the Henry Draper Catalogue designation for a [[Astronomy:Star|star]] in the southern [[Astronomy:Constellation|constellation]] Puppis. It has an [[Astronomy:Apparent visual magnitude|apparent visual magnitude]] of 8.07,<ref name=aaa485_2_571/> which makes it too faint to be seen with the naked eye. Based upon [[Astronomy:Parallax|parallax]] measurements made during the [[Astronomy:Hipparcos|Hipparcos]] mission, it is located at a distance of roughly {{Convert|293|ly|pc|abbr=off|lk=on}} from Earth.<ref name="Gaia2016"/>

This star has a [[Astronomy:Stellar classification|stellar classification]] of G5IV/V,<ref name=houk1978/> suggesting that, at an age of 4.8 billion years,<ref name=aaa418_989/> it has reached an intermediate [[Astronomy:Stellar evolution|evolutionary]] stage between a [[Astronomy:Main sequence|main sequence]] star and a subgiant. It has but 93% of the mass of the Sun,<ref name="MAGELLAN"/> while its [[Astronomy:Stellar atmosphere|outer atmosphere]] has begun to expand, reaching about 2.3 times the Sun's radius.<ref name=exoplanet/> HD 48265 is radiating 62%<ref name=exoplanet/> of the Sun's luminosity from its atmosphere at an [[Astronomy:Effective temperature|effective temperature]] of 5,508&nbsp;K,<ref name=aaa418_989/> giving it the cool orange glow of a [[Astronomy:K-type star|K-type star]].<ref name=csiro/> Measurement of the chemical abundances of this star indicate that, compared to the Sun, it has a 95%<ref name=aaa485_2_571/> greater proportion of elements other than hydrogen and helium—what astronomers term the star's [[Astronomy:Metallicity|metallicity]].

==Planetary system==
In October 2008 the planet, [[Astronomy:HD 48265 b|HD 48265 b]], was reported to be orbiting this star. This object was detected using the radial velocity method during an [[Astronomy:Astronomical survey|astronomical survey]] conducted by the [[Astronomy:Magellan Planet Search Program|Magellan Planet Search Program]] using the MIKE echelle spectrograph on the 6.5-m [[Astronomy:Magellan Telescopes|Magellan II (Clay) telescope]].<ref name="MAGELLAN"/>
