''Taranis'' was discovered on 2 September 1986, by French astronomer [[Biography:Alain Maury|Alain Maury]] at the [[Organization:Palomar Observatory|Palomar Observatory]] in California, United States.<ref name="MPC-object" /> It is one of very few asteroids located in the 2:1 mean-motion resonance with [[Astronomy:Jupiter|Jupiter]].<ref name="Roig-2002" /> When at aphelion of 5.4 [[Astronomy:Astronomical unit|AU]],<ref name=jpldata/> the object is roughly the same distance from the Sun as Jupiter is when Jupiter is at aphelion. The unstable resonance with Jupiter is expected to last roughly 7.3 million years.<ref name="Roig-2002" />

''Taranis'' also is expected of being a dormant comet.<ref name="Mommert-2015" /> On 10 September 2099 it will pass {{convert|0.1325|AU|km mi|abbr=on|lk=on}} from Earth.<ref name=jpldata/>
