It was discovered on 16 August 1925, by Soviet astronomer [[Biography:Grigory Shajn|Grigory Shajn]] at Simeiz Observatory on the Crimean peninsula.<ref name="MPC-Ukraina" /> It was named in honor of {{wipe|Ukraine}}.<ref name="springer" />

''Ukraina'' orbits the Sun in the [[Astronomy:Kirkwood gap|inner]] main-belt at a distance of 1.9–2.9&nbsp;[[Astronomy:Astronomical unit|AU]] once every 3 years and 8 months (1,340 days). Its orbit has an [[Astronomy:Orbital eccentricity|eccentricity]] of 0.21 and an [[Astronomy:Orbital inclination|inclination]] of 8[[Degree (angle)|°]] with respect to the [[Astronomy:Ecliptic|ecliptic]].<ref name="jpldata" />

The body's [[Astronomy:Observation arc|observation arc]] begins at Heidelberg, five days after its official discovery observation at Simeiz.<ref name="MPC-Ukraina" />

This [[Astronomy:Minor planet|minor planet]] was named after the country {{wipe|Ukraine}}, then the ''[[Place:Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic|Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic]]'' (1922–1991). The name was proposed by the Institute of Theoretical Astronomy in Leningrad, what is now St. Petersburg.<ref name="springer" /> The official {{MoMP|1709|naming citation}} was published by the [[Organization:Minor Planet Center|Minor Planet Center]] on 1 June 1967 ({{small|M.P.C. 2740}}).<ref name="DoMP-Circular-dates" />
